Norman Rewind: Three Key Tips

PAA Communications

CONCORD, N.C. – Lake Norman presented a good challenge at the halfway point of the season on the PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix.

Norman is rife with spotted bass that make up most of the population in the 28,500-acre lake. The field knew a limit of spots in summer probably wouldn’t get the job done. At least one, if not two, largemouth kickers each day most likely would have to be in the bag to offer a run to the top.

That’s exactly what played out for Nitro Boats pro Edwin Evers of Oklahoma, who claimed the win with a four-day catch of 41.71 pounds. A 1-pound late check-in penalty the first day knocked his final total back a pound, but it was enough to win by almost six pounds over late-charging Bass Pro Shops pro Ott DeFoe of Tennessee and Ranger Boats pro Chris Baumgardner of North Carolina.

Despite the penalty, Evers didn’t need it after bringing in 15.70 pounds on the final day. The week’s biggest limit included a 5.19 largemouth, another over four pounds and a third of about three pounds.

Here are three things we learned this week: Click Here

CONCORD, N.C. – Nitro Boats pro Edwin Evers caught five bass weighing 15.70 pounds Saturday on Lake Norman for a three-day total of 40.71 to win by almost six pounds in the second event of the PAA Bass Pro Shops Tournament Series presented by Carrot Stix.

The veteran Oklahoma pro had a 5.19-pound largemouth, one more than four pounds and another more than three in his final-day catch. It was the largest limit of the week and came after Evers dissected his “docks with brush” pattern more thoroughly on the second day.

That resulted in him staying on the deeper brush a bit more Saturday, working 3/8ths-ounce Booyah Jig and a Texas-rigged Yum! Dinger with a 1/4-ounce tungsten weight. Evers made short pitches toward the dock and worked the baits to the brush. He also threw a 3/8ths-ounce Bass Pro Shops Lazer Eye buzzbait around specific shallow, shady areas containing cover, riprap or sandy bottoms with spawning bluegills. Full Story

Ever's 2nd Day 1 Lake Norman PAA

Evers made it back to the launch in plenty of time today (he was assessed a 1-pound penalty on day 1 for being a minute late), but his cargo was of a lesser quality.

"I didn't get near as many bites or as big of bites," he said. I didn't catch them early like I had been. Some people caught the snot out of them and I kind of feel like I got left behind.

"I'll have to cover more water tomorrow because I've got to find some more fish."

He caught seven keepers for the day and his sack was headed up by a 3-pounder. He again fished both deep and shallow and weighed four largemouths and one spot (he brought in largemouths on day 1).

"If I can catch 14 pounds tomorrow, then no doubt I'll have a chance." Full Story

Evers felt like he did the things he should have to have a much better day, but it wasn't in the cards.

"It started out pretty slow and it was a real grind," he said. "I feel like I can still catch them because I know I'm around a lot of fish. I thought it was going to happen quick and often, but it didn't happen at all for me.

"(The AOY) wasn't going to be won or lost today – there's still a lot of fishing left. I'm excited to get back out there tomorrow." Complete Story

Brothers in arms

WETUMPKA, Ala. -- The conversation at a Butcher/Evers family dinner is sure to include fishing, especially lately.

Both Terry Butcher and Edwin Evers, who married Butcher's sister, live on family cattle property alongside each other in Talala, Okla. Each qualified and are fishing this week in the Toyota Trucks Championship Week. Read Complete Story

AOY: One more day
Reese's nearest competitor heading into this week, Edwin Evers, rose 25 places in the standings today, all the way from 38th to 13th, and while he won't be fishing tomorrow, he's maintained his position in second entering the post-season. Evers' brother-in-law Terry Butcher will also make the drive back to Talala, Okla. without fishing another day of competition, but his 20th place finish this week assured him that he'll make the post-season a year after he qualified for his first Classic. He moved up from 6th to 5th this week, with one day left for a slight shuffling. Complete Story
